Jan van Eyck was one of the great masters of Early Netherlandish painting. He worked in Bruges as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, who also sent him on diplomatic missions.
Van Eyck took oil painting to a new level of precision: light, reflections and the textures of fabric, metal and skin in his pictures look almost real. His best-known works include the Ghent Altarpiece, begun with his brother Hubert, and the Arnolfini Portrait.
